Sea Lanterns:

Voices Across the Sea

A Luminous Journey of Filipino Contemporary Art for Art Trek 2025

Dorothy Circus Gallery Rome / Nov 5-17, 2025

As autumn casts its golden veil, November will see Dorothy Circus Gallery collaborate with the Philippine Embassy in Rome for a vibrant group exhibition celebrating the diverse visual languages of contemporary Filipino art. Featuring Blic, Mister Sasquatch, and Rene Cuvos, the show brings together three distinct voices whose work converge in their capacity to reimagine the world around them.

Here, the street meets the dreamscape, the fantastical meets the symbolic, and personal history is refracted into shared cultural narratives. Together, these artists explore themes of identity, heritage and resistance—offering a kaleidoscopic vision of cultural transformation where tradition dances with reinvention.

Blic’s streetborn hand crowned with a smile signals connection and presence; Rene Cuvos paints dream renaissance havens where chaos yields to hope; Mister Sasquatch leads cinematic journeys, portals of wonder shaped by precise craft.

Set within the historic heart of Rome, this exhibition is a dialogue between two cultures, a celebration of the Philippines’ boundless creativity, and an invitation to step into worlds where imagination, memory, and meaning converge.

Blic

Blic (b. 1985) is a self-taught Filipino street artist known for an original visual code: a personified human hand crowned with a smile. Rooted in the Kawaii pop spirit, his emblem has earned international attention.

After a Rome debut in 2020 with the group show “House of the Rising Light,” major galleries presented his work across China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Lebanon, Portugal, and the United Kingdom, with Phillips and Sotheby’s offering pieces since 2022.

His theme of hands as universal communication drives his voice. Blic co-founded Cavite’s Cavity Collective.

Rene Cuvos

Rene Cuvos, is a Filipino artist whose practice is rooted in the lucid terrain of dreams. From childhood to now daydreaming has been his refuge and engine, a quiet ritual that turns inner weather into clear images. In that space he redraws the borders of reality, shaping worlds where he can decide the light, the scale, and pace of time.

Cuvos calls the dream “a place where I can be myself, where I can do what I want to happen, where I can control the world.” He stages Renaissance inflected scenes that feel intimate yet vast, balancing order and chance.

Figures, ruins, and horizons return like anchors, while mists, ripples, and drifting petals complicate the stillness. Each picture holds a quiet tension between chaos and hope and invites the viewer to breathe at its measured tempo. For Cuvos, art is not escape but alignment. The studio is a sanctuary where imagination and discipline meet, a place to test the possible and give weight to what is often fleeting. He builds atmospheres that seem to carry their own weather: soft light, distant thunder, hush before rain, so memory and possibility can sit within the same frame. His work offers shelter and outlook, in an uncertain world Cuvos proposes attentiveness as a form of courage.

His paintings ask us to look longer, to accept unhurried pacing, and to trust stillness and presence. They open a path back to the self and forward to what might be, reminding us that between waking and dreaming there is a durable ground for hope.

Mister Sasquatch

Mister Sasquatch (b. 1990) crafts fantastical worlds filled with dreamlike vistas, wide-eyed travelers, and larger-than-life companions. Technically precise and cinematically minded from earlier work in video and film, he builds scenes that feel surreal and inviting.

Since 2015 he has shown widely, amassing a devoted following. His paintings and illustrations have appeared in Taiwan, China, and the United Kingdom, alongside four solo shows and numerous fairs and group exhibitions. He shapes cast and mythic settings with care and calm.
